A mixed bag of September weather.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during September were fairly typical of early spring, with a mix of warm and cold outbreaks, strong winds and frost.  Not so typical was a dust storm recorded on September 22, and sleet on September 27.

Nights were cool to cold, with an average minimum of 4.9°C; up slightly on the average of 4.6°C recorded last September and above Gungahlin’s longer term September average of 4.4°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on September 13, when the temperature was a mild 12.3°C, while on September 2, it dropped to a frosty -2.4°C.

Days were generally cool to mild and sunny, with an average maximum of 16.2°C; down slightly on Gungahlin’s long term September average of 16.6°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 24.2°C, recorded on September 13, while on September 27, cloudy skies, strong NW winds and sleet combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 6.2°C, the coldest September maximum recorded in Gungahlin since the Weather Centre opened in 1999.

Gungahlin recorded 6 frosts during September and there was 1 fog. This compares to the 9 frosts and 2 fogs recorded last September.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 6.6 km/h during September, with the strongest gust for the month 56.3 km/h from the N, recorded on September 23.

Despite the gloomy rainfall forecast, Gungahlin received a welcome 50.6mm of rain during September, over 9 days.  This compared to the 56.3mm that fell last September, and was only slightly below Gungahlin’s longer term September average of 52.2mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also pleasing, with Canberra AP recording 56.2mm for the month and Tuggeranong 65.6mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2009 now stands at 266.6mm, well down on the 307.6mm that fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's October outlook:  Typical spring weather conditions should continue in Gungahlin during October.  Overall, daytime temperatures will average at around 20°C, and nights at 6°C.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 6.7°C to 19.9°C.  Rainfall prospects for October are good, with above average falls likely.  With this in mind, Gungahlin should receive at least 60mm of rain for the month, above the longer term average of 53mm.  There is a more worrying sign beyond spring, as an El Nino weather phenomenon continues to develop across the Pacific Ocean.  El Nino is generally associated with warmer, drier conditions.
