Gungahlin records a cold end to winter.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during August were generally cold and cloudy, with temperatures and rainfall both below normal.  Snow was recorded on August 17.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 0.1°C; well down on the average of 2.2°C recorded last August.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 1.6°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on August 23, when the temperature was a mild 5.7°C, while on August 27, it dropped to an icy -4.3°C.

Days were generally cold, cloudy and windy, with an average maximum of 10.9°C; well below last August’s mild average of 14.3°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 12.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 17.1°C, recorded on August 22, while on August 31, cloudy skies, gusty W winds and nearby snow, combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 7.2°C.

After three snow free winters, it was nice to see some snowflakes falling across the Gungahlin suburbs on August 17.  The falls, which started around 10.30am as the temperature dropped to 0.4°C, didn’t settle, but were heavier enough to get people excited and rushing for their cameras.  Snow was also recorded in Belconnen, the city and Canberra Airport.  On average, snow falls in Gungahlin every second winter.

Gungahlin received 25 frosts during August and there was 1 fog.  This compares to the 16 frosts and 7 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during August 2011.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 4.7km/h during August, down on the average of 5.9 km/h recorded last year.  The strongest gust for the month was 48.3 km/h from the W, recorded on August 17.

Gungahlin’s dry winter continued in August with only 34.0mm falling at the Weather Centre, over 12 days.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 51.8mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 40.4mm for the month, Tuggeranong 27.6mm, Monash 31.0mm and Melba 49.2mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2012 now stands at 482.4mm, well above the 279.0mm that fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's September outlook:  After one of the coldest August’s on record, temperatures in Gungahlin during September look like remaining a little below normal.  Overall, days should average at around 15.5°C, and nights at 3.5°C.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term September average of 4.3°C to 16.4°C.  Rainfall prospects for the coming spring season look good, with September likely to see slightly above average falls.  With this in mind, Gungahlin should receive around 60mm of rain during September, up on the longer term average of 50.5mm.
