Gungahlin records a cold end to a fairly mild winter.

Winter saved its best for last in Gungahlin, with much colder and wetter than normal weather conditions in August.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 2.0°C; well down on the average of 3.1°C recorded last August, but slightly warmer than Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 1.6°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on August 15, when the temperature was a mild 6.2°C, while on August 9, it dropped to a frosty -2.6°C.

Days were generally cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 10.3°C; well down on last August’s average of 13.0°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 13.1°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a mild 14.7°C, recorded on August 9, while on August 26, overcast skies, gusty N winds and nearby snowfalls combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 5.8°C.

Unfortunately, despite a series of vigorous cold fronts that crossed the region in the last week of August, dumping up to metre of snow in the mountains, not a single snow flake fell in Gungahlin.  This made it the second winter in a row without snow.  On average, snow falls in Gungahlin every second winter.

Gungahlin received 16 frosts during August and there was 1 fog.  This compares to the 12 frosts and 3 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during August 2009.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at a fresh 5.9 km/h during August, with the strongest gust for the month 54.7 km/h from the N, recorded on August 19.

Following on from the healthy 47.6mm of rain that fell in July, Gungahlin recorded a welcome 59.8mm of rain during August, over 15 days.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 53.0mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also impressive, with Canberra AP recording 69.2mm for the month, Monash 64.4mm and Tuggeranong 35.4mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2010 now stands at 349.6mm, well above the 216.0mm that fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's September outlook:  After one of the coldest August’s on record, weather conditions across Gungahlin during September should return to normal.  Overall, days should average at around 16°C, and nights at 5°C.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term September average of 4.4°C to 16.6°C.  Rainfall prospects for the coming spring season look promising, with above average rain likely to fall across most areas of SE Australia over the next few months.  With this in mind, Gungahlin should receive around 60mm of rain during September.  Gungahlin’s longer term September average is 52.0mm.
