Snow falls during Gungahlin's cold, cloudy August 2008.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during August were dominated by cloudy skies, cold temperatures and moderate NW winds.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 1.3 degrees; well down on the very mild average of 4.3 degrees recorded last August.  The warmest night for the month occurred on August 31, when the temperature was a mild 6.8 degrees, while on August 19 it dropped to a freezing -4.5 degrees.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 11.1 degree; well down on the 13.9 degrees recorded in August 2007.  The highest temperature for the month was a mild 15.7 degrees, recorded on August 29.  In contrast, Gungahlin residents awoke on Sunday, August 10 to a very light dusting of snow.  A heavier, but brief fall hit many suburbs of Canberra (including Gungahlin) around 1.30pm on the same date.  Gungahlin's temperature range on 10 August was -0.4°C to 4.8°C. 

Gungahlin recorded 21 frosts during August (5 frosts last August), and there was 1 fog (3 fogs last August).

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 5.2 km/h during August, with the strongest gust for the month 48.3 km/h from the NW, recorded on August 1.

Despite the cloudy skies, rainfall totals across the region were below average during August, with Gungahlin recording 33.3mm of rain for the month, over 14 days.  This compared to the 8.9mm which fell last August.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also disappointing, with just 16.8mm recorded at Canberra AP and 20.8mm at Tuggeranong.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall for 2008 now stands at 266.2mm, down slightly on the 267.1mm which fell over the same period last year. 

Gungahlin's September Outlook:  Current indications are for slightly cooler, cloudier weather conditions for Gungahlin during September.  Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 16 degrees, and nights at 4 degrees.  Despite the drier than normal winter conditions, rainfall prospects for the first month of spring look promising.  With an increase in surface moisture and passing low pressure troughs, Gungahlin should receive at least 50mm of rain during September, slightly below the longer term average of 53.2mm.
