Gungahlin records another snow less July.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during July were close to average, but it was rather dry and, for the 10th July in a row, snow less.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 1.7°C; considerably colder than the average of 2.7°C recorded last July, but above Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 1.1°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on July 30, when the temperature was a very mild 9.5°C (a new July record warm night for Gungahlin – beating the 8.8°C in July 2013), while on July 4, it dropped to a frosty -3.7°C.
Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 10.7°C, well below the average of 11.9°C last year.  Gungahlin’s longer term July average is 11.1°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a mild 16.6°C, recorded on July 31, while on July 9, overcast skies, light rain and nearby snow, combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 6.6°C.

Despite several cold outbreaks during the month, with widespread low level snow falls, not a single snow flake fell at Gungahlin.  This made it the 10th July in a row without snow.

Gungahlin received 17 frosts during July and there were 4 fogs.  This compares to the 18 frosts and 7 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during July 2013.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 4.0 km/h during the month, well above the average of 3.2 km/h recorded last July. The strongest gust for the month was 45.1 km/h from the W/SW, recorded on July 31.

Rainfall during July was below average across much of the region, with Gungahlin recording just 16.6mm of rain for the month, over 15 days.  This compares to the 40.0mm that fell last year and Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 37.5mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording just 16.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 18.2mm, Monash 22.3mm and Melba 31.0mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2014 now stands at 287.0mm, up on the 241.4mm that fell over the same period last year.
