Gungahlin records 'average' July weather.

Weather conditions in Gungahlin during July were fairly typical of the season with temperatures and rainfall both about average.  It was also the eighth July in a row without snow.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 0.3°C; up slightly on the 0.0°C recorded last July, but down on Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 0.9°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on July 13, when the temperature was a mild 8.4°C (a new July record warm night for Gungahlin), while on July 4, it dropped to an icy -5.1°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 11.0°C, well above the record breaking cold average of just 9.9°C last year, but spot on Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 11.0°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a mild 14.4°C, recorded on July 13, while on July 15, overcast skies and cold, gusting W/NW combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 7.4°C.

Gungahlin received 21 frosts during July and there were 4 fogs.  This compares to the 23 frosts and 5 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during July 2011.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 2.6 km/h during the month, well below the average of 4.6 km/h recorded last July. The strongest gust for the month was 35.4 km/h from the W, recorded on July 13.

Gungahlin’s fairly dry winter continued, with 37.4mm of rain falling during July, over 19 days.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 38.8mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 39.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 44.0mm, Monash 43.4mm and Melba 51.0mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2012 now stands at 448.4mm, well above the 232.4mm that fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's August outlook:  Cool to cold and mostly cloudy weather looks set to continue well into August and this should see slightly below average temperatures for Gungahlin, especially during the day.  Overall, days should average at around 12.5°C, and nights at 2.0°C.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 1.6°C to 13.1°C.  The relatively dry winter looks set to continue into August, with Gungahlin likely to receive around 45mm of rain for the month, below the longer term August average of 53.0mm.  Despite missing out on any snow during June and July, there’s a 60% chance of a flake or two falling before the winter finishes.
