Gungahlin's mild, dry July 2003.

Gungahlin's relatively mild winter continued into July, with temperatures a little above, and rainfall a little below, average.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 0.8°C, slightly up on last July's average of 0.3°C.   The warmest night for the month occurred on July 12, when the temperature was a mild 6.2°C, while on July 31 it dropped to a freezing minus 5.4°C.   In fact, Gungahlin's temperature dropped to 0°C or below on 16 mornings during the month.

Days were generally cool to cold, with an average maximum of 11.0°C, slightly cooler than last July's average of 11.5°C last June).   The highest temperature for the month was a very mild 16.8°C, recorded on July 23, while on July 24, constant drizzle and strong W/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum to just 5.6°C.   The maximum temperature failing to reach double figures in Gungahlin on 9 days during the month.

July was fairly frosty, with Gungahlin recording some frost on 19 mornings during the month, there were 5 fogs and no snowfalls.   This is despite a very cold outbreak towards the end of the month, which brought snow to low levels around the region.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 6.6km/h during July, with the strongest gust for the month 64.4km/h from the W/NW, recorded on July 24.

Proving the region is still not fully out of the drought, Gungahlin's total rainfall for July was just 36.4mm, with some rain falling at the Weather Centre on 12 days.   This brings Gungahlin's total rainfall so far in 2003 to only 223.4mm, some 99.2mm less than was recorded over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's August Outlook:  Current indications are for a cool to cold, fairly sunny August.   Overall, days should average at 13°C and nights around 1°C.  Unfortunately, rainfall again looks likely to be below average.
