Gungahlin records a slightly warmer and wetter start to winter 2015.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin to start the 2015 winter season were generally a little warmer and wetter than normal.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 1.2°C; significantly down on last year’s mild average of 3.4°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term June average is 2.1°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on June 16, when the temperature was a mild 9.7°C, while on June 2, it dropped to an icy -5.5°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 12.3°C; up on last June’s average of 11.6°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term June average is 11.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was 15.9°C, recorded on June 12, while on June 30, light winds and a fog that struggled to lift until after noon, combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to 9.3°C.

Gungahlin received 20 frosts during June and there were 7 fogs.  This compares to the 13 frosts and 4 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during June 2014.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.4 km/h during June, well down on the average of 3.6 km/h recorded last year.  The strongest gust for the month was 35.4 km/h from the NW, recorded on June 9.

After a very dry May, Gungahlin received a welcome 57.2mm of rain in June, over 19 days.  This compares to the 59.8mm that fell last June and Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 51.6mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also generally above average, with Canberra AP recording 55.2mm of rain for the month, Tuggeranong 83.4mm, Monash 85.4mm and Melba 83.0mm.
