Gungahlin records a cool, wet start to winter 2013.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin to start the winter season were a little milder and wetter than normal.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 2.7°C; up on last year’s average of 2.1°C and above Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 2.0°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on June 1, when the temperature was a warm 10.8°C, while on June 22, it dropped to an icy -3.4°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 12.1°C; well up on last June’s average of 10.7°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term June average is 11.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was 15.1°C, recorded on June 26, while on June 24, cloudy skies and continuous heavy rain combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 7.7°C.

Gungahlin received 14 frosts during June and there were 3 fogs.  This compares to the 13 frosts and 3 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during June 2012.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 2.0 km/h during June, well down on the average of 3.1 km/h recorded last year.  The strongest gust for the month was 37.0 km/h from the NE, recorded on June 1.

Gungahlin recorded a wet start to winter this year, with 66.8mm of rain falling at the Weather Centre, over 15 days.  This compares to the 38.6mm that fell last June and Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 50.8mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also above average, with Canberra AP recording 85.2mm of rain for the month, Tuggeranong 79.8mm, Monash 99.0mm and Melba 108.6mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2013 now stands at 217.8mm, well down on the 411.0mm that fell over the same period last year.
