Gungahlin records a cool, cloudy start to winter 2011.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin to start the winter season were a slightly cooler, and much drier than normal.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 1.5°C; up slightly on the average of 1.3°C recorded last June, but below Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 2.1°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on June 15, when the temperature was a mild 6.0°C, while on June 27, it dropped to a frosty -2.4°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 11.6°C; up a little on last June’s average of 11.3°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term June average is 11.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a relatively warm 16.2°C, recorded on June 2, while on June 8, cloudy skies and gusty NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 4.8°C.

Gungahlin received 20 frosts during June and there were 4 fogs.  This compares to the 17 frosts and 3 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during June 2010.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.4 km/h during June, with the strongest gust for the month 38.6 km/h from the N/NW, recorded on June 21.

The recent dry spell continued into June, with Gungahlin recording just 13.4mm of rain for the month, over 12 days.  This compares Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 53.3mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also well below average, with Canberra AP recording just 8.4mm of rain for the month, Tuggeranong 11.0mm and Monash 10.6mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2011 now stands at 204.4mm, well below the 242.2mm that fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's July outlook:  Slightly colder and drier than normal weather conditions are likely in Gungahlin during July.  Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 10.7°C, and nights at 0.5°C.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 1.0°C to 11.1°C.  Rainfall prospects are a little harder to judge, and will largely depend on whether Gungahlin benefits from passing cold fronts, due to hit the area in the second and third weeks of July.  With this in mind, Gungahlin should receive around 30mm of rain during the month, down on the longer term average of almost 40mm.  It’s also likely Gungahlin will record at least one snowfall before the end of July.
