A warmish start to winter 2003.

Gungahlin received a relatively mild start to winter 2003, with warmer temperatures and fewer frosts than normal.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 3.0°C (2.6°C last June).   The warmest night occurred on June 2, when the temperature was a mild 8.7°C, while on June 9 it dropped to a frosty -2.3°C.   Gungahlin's temperature dropped to below zero on 9 mornings during the month.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 11.5°C (11.9°C last June).   The highest temperature for the month was a mild 15.2°C, recorded on June 4, while on June 14, overcast skies and near gale force NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum to just 6.8°C.   In fact, the temperature failed to reach double figures on 7 days during the month.

Gungahlin recorded 14 frosts during June, and there were 8 early morning fogs.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 6.8km/h during June, easily making it the windiest month of 2003 so far.   The strongest gust for the month was 64.4km/h from the NW, recorded on June 14.

It is pleasing to report that Gungahlin's June rainfall was a little above average.  In fact, the 49.8mm recorded at the Weather Centre made June the second wettest month of the year so far.  Some rain fell on 17 days during the month.

Gungahlin's July Outlook:  Current indications are for a cold and cloudy July in Gungahlin, with above average rainfall.  Winter temperatures should continue to be a little above average, especially at night.  Gungahlin's first snowfall of the year is likely between July 22 and 24.
