Gungahlin records a mild, cloudy end to autumn 2014.

Cloudy skies and above average temperatures dominated weather conditions in Gungahlin during May, with nights particularly mild.

Nights were generally cool, with an average minimum of 4.9°C, well up on last Mays average of 3.6°C and Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 3.6°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on May 23 and 24, when the temperature was a warm 11.0°C, while on May 9, it dropped to a colder -0.7°C.

Days were mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 15.8°C; up slightly on last years average of 15.7°C.  For the record, Gungahlin’s longer term May average is also 15.7°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a pleasant 20.1°C, recorded on May 26, while on May 3, cloudy skies, rain and gusty N/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a cold 8.5°C.

Gungahlin recorded 6 frosts during May and there were 3 fogs.  This compares to last Mays 9 frosts and 4 fogs.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.3 km/h during May, with the strongest gust for the month 37.0 km/h from the N, recorded on May 27.

After above average falls in April, rainfall was fairly light in May and totals were generally a little below normal.  Gungahlin recorded 20.4mm of rain during May, over 12 days.  This compares to the 7.8mm that fell last May. 

Falls in other parts of Canberra were also light, with Canberra AP recording 14.4mm for the month, Tuggeranong 18.4mm and Melba 24.6mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2014 stands at 210.6mm, well above the 151.0mm that fell over the same period last year.
