Gungahlin records a dry May 2013.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during May were fairly typical of the season, although rainfall was scarce.

Nights were generally cool to cold, with an average minimum of 3.6°C, well up on last Mays cold average of 1.8°C, but close to Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 3.5°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on May 31, when the temperature was a mild 7.7°C, while on May 26, it dropped to a cold -1.4°C.

Days were generally cool to mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 15.7°C; up on last years average of 13.7°C, but spot on Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 15.7°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a pleasant 22.3°C, recorded on May 10, while on May 22, cloudy skies and rain combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a cooler 11.1°C.

Gungahlin recorded 9 frosts during May, and there were 4 fogs.  This compares to last Mays 19 frosts and 5 fogs.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.5 km/h during May, with the strongest gust for the month 38.6 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on May 16.

Gungahlin recorded just 7.8mm of rain during May, over 11 days.  This compares to the 23.8mm that fell last May.  For the record, May is traditionally the driest month of the year in Gungahlin with an average of just 22.8mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also light, with Canberra AP recording 7.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 12.6mm, Monash 21.0mm and Melba 13.0mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2013 stands at 151.0mm, well below the 372.4mm that fell over the same period last year.
