Gungahlin records a cold, frosty May.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during May were cooler and slightly drier than normal.

Nights were generally cold, with an average minimum of 1.8°C, up on last Mays average of 1.5°C, but well below Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 3.5°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on May 11, when the temperature was a mild 8.2°C, while on May 14, it dropped to a frosty minus 2.3°C.

Days were generally cool to mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 13.7°C; down on last years average of 13.9°C and significantly below Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 15.7°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a pleasant 19.9°C, recorded on May 10, while on May 26, cloudy skies and cold, gusty W winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a chilly 8.7°C.

Gungahlin recorded 19 frosts during the May, and there were 5 fogs.  This compares to last Mays 20 frosts and 2 fogs.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.5 km/h during May, with the strongest gust for the month 56.3 km/h from the W, recorded on May 25.

Gungahlin recorded 23.8mm of rain during May, over 13 days.  This compares to the 14.6mm that fell last May.  For the record, May is traditionally the driest month of the year in Gungahlin with an average of just 23.8mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also light, with Canberra AP recording 21.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 27.8mm, Monash 38.2mm and Melba 29.0mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2012 stands at 372.4mm, well above the 190.7mm that fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's June outlook:  Current indications are that weather conditions in Gungahlin for the first month of winter will be a little cooler and drier than normal.  Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 11.5°C, and nights at 1.0°C.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 2.0°C to 11.9°C.  Rainfall prospects for June look a little mixed and will largely depend on Gungahlin receiving its fair share of rain from passing cold fronts.  With this in mind, Gungahlin looks set to receive around 40mm of rain for the month, below the longer term June average of 53.3mm.
