Gungahlin records a warm, dry April in 2016.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during April 2016 were much warmer and drier than normal.

Nights were cool to mild, with an average minimum of 9.5°C, above last Aprils average of 8.2°C and well above Gungahlin’s longer term April average of 7.3°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on April 6, when the temperature was a very mild 18.2°C.  This is the warmest April night recorded at the Weather Centre, beating the previous record warm night of 15.8°C on 3 April 2005.  In contrast, on April 26, it dropped to a cool 4.2°C.

Days were generally mild to warm and partly cloudy, with an average maximum of 22.9°C; well above last years average of 18.3°C and Gungahlin’s longer term April average of 20.3°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a rather warm 29.4°C, recorded on April 6, while on April 8, Gungahlin's maximum temperature was a cool 17.7°C.

Due to the well above average minimum temperatures during April, Gungahlin failed to register any frosts during the month, but there were 5 fogs.  This compares to the 1 frost and 0 fogs received in April 2015.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.2km/h during April, with the strongest gust for the month 45.1km/h from the NW, recorded on April 6.

Gungahlin recorded just 13.2mm of rain during April, over 8 days.  This compares to the 77.8mm that fell last April, and Gungahlin’s long term April average of 30.5mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were even lighter, with Canberra AP recording just 6.8mm for the month, Tuggeranong 6.6mm, Monash 5.6mm and Melba 10.0mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall for 2016 now stands at 175.4mm, well below the 201.0mm that fell over the same period last year.
