Gungahlin records a cool, wet April 2015.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during April 2015 were cooler, cloudier and wetter than normal.

Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 8.2°C, up on last Aprils average of 7.9°C and above Gungahlin’s longer term April average 7.3°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on April 2, when the temperature was a mild 14.5°C, while on April 29, it dropped to a cold 2.1°C.

Days were generally mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 18.3°C; down on last years average of 18.7°C and well below Gungahlin’s longer term April average of 20.2°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 25.6°C, recorded on April 1, while on April 21, cloudy skies and cold and gusty S winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a cold 11.6°C.

Proving winter isn’t too far, Gungahlin recorded its first frost of the year on April 29.  In comparison, Gungahlin’s first frost in 2014 was on April 21.  In 2013 it was also April 21, while in 2012 it was recorded 11 days earlier, on April 10.  The first frost in 2011 was recorded on April 23.  There were no fogs.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.6 km/h (1.5 km/h last April), with the strongest gust for the month 35.4 km/h from the SW, recorded on April 20.

After a very dry March, which saw just 11.8mm of rain fall, Gungahlin recorded a very welcome 77.8mm of rain during April, over 14 days.  This compares to the 61.4mm that fell last April, and Gungahlin’s long term April average of 31.3mm.

Falls in other parts of Canberra were also well above average, with Canberra AP recording 91.8mm for the month, Tuggeranong 96.8mm, Monash 107.0mm and Melba 102.1mm.
