Rain Gungahlin records a cooler, wetter April.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during April were cooler, cloudier and wetter than normal.

Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 7.9°C, up on last Aprils average of 7.3°C and a little warmer than Gungahlin’s longer term April average 7.2°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on April 10, when the temperature was a mild 13.9°C, while on April 21, it dropped to a cold 0.5°C.

Days were generally mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 18.7°C; well down on last years average of 20.5°C and below Gungahlin’s longer term April average of 20.3°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 25.0°C, recorded on April 2, while on April 4, overcast skies and continuous rain, combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a cool 14.5°C.

Proving winter isn’t too far away, Gungahlin recorded its first frost of the year on April 21.  In comparison, Gungahlin’s first frost last year was also recorded on April 21, while in 2012 it was recorded 11 days earlier, on April 10.  The first frost in 2011 was recorded on April 23.  Gungahlin also recorded 1 fog during the month, the same as last April.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.5 km/h (2.1 km/h last April), with the strongest gust for the month 37.0 km/h from the N/NW, recorded on April 26.

Gungahlin recorded a welcome 61.4mm of rain during April, over 11 days.  This compares to the 11.8mm that fell last April, and Gungahlin’s long term April average of 28.5mm.

Falls in other parts of Canberra were also above average, with Canberra AP recording 69.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 111.2mm and Monash 104.2mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2014 now stands at 190.2mm, well above the 143.2mm that fell over the same period last year.
