Rain fails to fall during Gungahlin's 'average' April 2013.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during April were pretty much spot on average, although rainfall was scarce.

Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 7.3°C, up on last Aprils average of 6.9°C and slightly warmer than Gungahlin’s longer term April average 7.1°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on April 28, when the temperature was a mild 12.5°C, while on ANZAC morning (April 25), it dropped to a cold 0.1°C.

Days were generally mild to warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 20.5°C; well up on last years average of 18.8°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term April average is 20.4°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 25.2°C, recorded on April 14, while on April 22, cloudy skies and gusty W/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a cool 14.1°C.

Proving winter isn’t too far away, Gungahlin recorded its first frost of the year on April 21.  In comparison, Gungahlin first frost last year was recorded 11 days earlier, on April 10.  The first frost in 2011 was recorded on April 23.  Gungahlin also recorded 1 fog during the month, compared to the 6 fogs last April.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.1 km/h during April, with the strongest gust for the month 30.6 km/h from the SW, recorded on April 20.

Despite the cloudy skies, rainfall during April was light, with Gungahlin recording just 11.8mm of rain for the month, over 9 days.  This compares to the 34.2mm that fell last April, and Gungahlin’s long term April average of 26.5mm.

Falls in other parts of Canberra were also well below average, with Canberra AP recording just 9.8mm for the month, Tuggeranong 15.2mm, Monash 17.6mm and Melba 20.2mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2013 now stands at 143.2mm, well below the 348.6mm that fell over the same period last year.
