April 2008 was cooler and dry.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during April were a little cooler and drier than normal. 

Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 5.6 degrees; well down on last Aprilís average of 8.3 degrees.  The warmest night for the month occurred on April 7, when the temperature was a mild 8.3 degrees, while on April 30 it dropped to a cold minus 0.6 degrees.

Days were generally mild to warm and partly cloudy, with an average maximum of 19.5 degrees; well down on the average of 21.7 degrees recorded last April.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 24.0 degrees, recorded on April 11.  In contrast, overcast skies and cold, gusty W/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlinís maximum temperature on April 28 to just 8.1 degrees.  (This is the coldest maximum temperature recorded in Gungahlin during April). 

Proving winter isnít too far away, Gungahlin recorded 3 frosts during April (0 frosts last April), and there were 4 fogs (2 fogs last April).

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.9 km/h during April, with the strongest gust for the month 51.5 km/h from the NW, recorded on April 2.

Continuing the recent spell of dry Aprilís, Gungahlin recorded just 18.0mm of rain during April this year, over 7 days.  This compared to the 29.7mm which fell last year and Gungahlinís longer term April average of 26.4mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also disappointing, with 17.4mm recorded at Canberra AP and just 11.4mm at Tuggeranong.  Gungahlinís total rainfall for 2008 now stands at 149.1mm, up slightly on the 113.2mm which fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's May Outlook:  Current indications are for slightly cooler, drier weather conditions for Gungahlin during May.  Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 15 degrees, and nights at 3 degrees.  Rainfall prospects are looking a little mixed, and will largely depend on passing frontal systems.  At this stage, itís looking unlikely that Gungahlin will reach its average May rainfall of around 26mm.
