Welcome follow-up rain falls during Gungahlin's warm, cloudy March 2010.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during March were slightly cooler, cloudier and much wetter than normal.

Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 11.7°C; down slightly on the average of 11.7°C recorded last March.  The warmest night for the month occurred on March 7, when the temperature was a muggy 17.4°C, while on March 22, it dropped to a cool 7.8°C.

Days were generally warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 24.5°C; well down on last years average of 26.3°C and below Gungahlin’s longer term March average of 25.2°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a very warm 29.8°C, recorded on March 18, while on March 9, cloudy skies and cool, gusty NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 19.5°C.

Proving winter isn’t that far away, Gungahlin recorded its first major fog of the year on March 23.  The fog, which had cleared by 9am, was thick enough to cause a hazard during the early morning commute.  In all, Gungahlin recorded 2 fogs for the month and there were no frosts.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.9 km/h during March, with the strongest gust for the month 41.8 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on March 21.

After a very wet February, which saw 104.2mm of rain fall in Gungahlin, good follow up falls during March kept Gungahlin’s gardens green.  Gungahlin recorded 50.8mm of rain for the month, over 7 days.  This was well above Gungahlin’s longer term March average of 33.6mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were even heavier, with Canberra AP recording 93.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 112.8mm, Monash 96.2mm and Belconnen 88.5mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2010 now stands at 161.0mm, well above the 69.4mm that fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's April outlook:  Slightly cooler and wetter weather conditions look set to dominate across Gungahlin during April.  Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 19°C, and nights at 7°C.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term April average of 7.2°C to 20.6°C.  Despite the dry March, rainfall prospects for April look reasonably positive, with Gungahlin set to receive at least 40mm of rain during the month, well above the longer term April average of just 28.9mm.
