Gungahlin's hot start to 2018.

Weather Conditions across Gungahlin to start the New Year were warmer and slightly drier than normal.

Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 14.3°C; down on last years average of 15.1°C.  Gungahlin’s longer-term January average is 14.0°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on January 8, when the temperature was a muggy 21.0°C, while on January 14 it dropped to a cool 7.8°C.

Days were generally hot and partly cloudy, with an average maximum of 31.1°C; down on last years record January average of 32.4°C, but still well above Gungahlin’s longer-term January average of 29.5°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a scorching 41.9°C, recorded on January 7.  In fact, this is the highest January temperature recorded at the Weather Centre, beating the previous record of 41.7°C on 16 January 2014.  In contrast, Gungahlin’s coolest January 2018 maximum was 19.5°C, recorded on January 14.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.0 km/h during January, with the strongest gust for the month 41.8km/h from the W/NW, recorded on January 13.

Gungahlin recorded 41.8mm of rain during January, over 10 days.  Gungahlin’s longer-term January average is 43.7mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra during January were also a little below average, with Canberra AP recording 38.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 37.4mm, Melba 39.6mm and Monash 33.0mm.
