Gungahlin records a much warmer start to summer.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during December 2012 were considerably better than they were during last December, when Gungahlin recorded its coldest start to a summer on record.  Last year, the temperature failed to reach 30°C on any day during the month but, this year, the temperature reached 30°C or more on 9 days during the month.

Overall, nights were mild, with an average minimum of 12.2°C; well up on last Decembers cool average of 9.6°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term December average is 11.7°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on December 14, when the temperature was a mild 16.6°C, while on December 6, it dropped to a cold 3.2°C.

Days were generally warm and partly cloudy, with an average maximum of 26.9°C; well above the average of 23.0°C recorded last December, but close to Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 26.2°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a hot 34.4°C, recorded on December 23, while on Christmas Day, overcast skies and a cool NE breeze combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a fairly cold 17.6°C.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.8km/h during December, with the strongest gust for the month 46.7km/h from the WSW, recorded on December 24.

Rainfall during December was moderate, helped largely by a brief, violent thunderstorm on Christmas Eve.  The storm, which hit the region around 5pm, dumped heavy rain and some hail on Gungahlin.  Strong, gusty W/SW winds accompanied the storm, bringing down several small trees across the Gungahlin region.  In all, Gungahlin recorded 47.0mm for the month, over 7 days.  This compared to the 36.2mm that fell last December, and is a little below Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 55.4mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were generally a little lighter, with Canberra AP recording 37.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 20.0mm, Monash 36.2mm and Melba 44.4mm.  The December fall brought Gungahlin’s total rainfall for 2012 to 662.6mm, well above the 516.6mm that fell in 2011.  Rainfall totals for 2012 for other areas include: Canberra AP: 711.2mm, Tuggeranong: 846.8mm, Monash: 856.4mm and Melba: 908.0mm.
