Gungahlin records a hot end to an 'average' November.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during November were typical of late spring, but a hot spell at the end of the month reminded everyone that summer is just around the corner.
Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 9.9°C; down on last Novembers average of 10.3°C. Gungahlin’s longer term November average is 9.8°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on November 30, when the temperature was a warm, muggy 19.0°C, while on November 2, it dropped to a cold 2.2°C. This was the coldest November morning in Gungahlin since 2006.
Days were generally warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 24.9°C; well up on last years average of 23.9°C. Gungahlin’s longer term November average is 23.9°C. The highest temperature for the month was a sizzling 34.6°C, recorded on November 30, while on November 3, overcast skies and E winds, combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature to a cooler 17.5°C.
Gungahlin recorded 1 light frost, but no fogs during November. This compared to the 0 frosts and 1 fog last November.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.3 km/h during November, with the strongest gust for the month 49.9 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on November 30. The average wind speed in Gungahlin last November was 3.1 km/h.
After two very wet Novembers, which saw 111.8mm fall in 2010 and 133.2mm in 2011, Gungahlin recorded a disappointing 32.8mm of rain this November, over 8 days. Gungahlin’s longer term November average is 70.5mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were also below average, with Canberra AP recording 29.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 39.4mm, Monash 47.8mm and Melba 37.7mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2012 now stands at 615.6mm, well above the 480.4mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's December outlook: Weather conditions in Gungahlin during December look set to be a little warmer and wetter than normal. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 27.5°C, and nights at 13°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term December average of 11.6°C to 26.1°C. Rainfall prospects for the month look promising, with Gungahlin likely to receive at least 60mm of rain during December, up on the longer term average of 56.0mm.
