Gungahlin records a balmy October 2015.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during October were both much warmer and drier than normal.

Nights were cool to mild with an average minimum of 9.9°C; warmer than the average of 7.1°C recorded last October and significantly above Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 6.8°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on October 5, when the temperature was a muggy 15.7°C, while on October 2, it dropped to a cool 4.6°C.

Days were generally warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 24.5°C; up on last October’s average of 22.2°C, and well above Gungahlin’s longer term October average of just 20.2°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a hot 31.3°C, recorded on October 6, while on October 22, overcast skies, rain and cool S/SW winds combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature to a cool 18.4°C.

Due to the well above average temperatures all month, it’s no great surprise that Gungahlin received no frost during October.  There were also no fogs.  This compares to the 2 frosts and 0 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during October 2014.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.8km/h during October (average 4.5 km/h last October), with the strongest gust for the month 33.8 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on October 6.

Despite the cloudy skies, Gungahlin recorded just 26.0mm of rain during October, over 12 days.  This compares to the 42.2mm that fell last October and is well down on Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 48.4mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also well below average, with Canberra AP recording 26.6mm for the month, Monash 35.8mm, Tuggeranong 31.4mm and Melba 21.3mm.
