Gungahlin records a mild, dry October 2013.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during October were a little warmer and much drier than normal.

Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 5.5; down on the average of 5.9°C recorded last October.  Gungahlin’s longer term October average is 6.6°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on October 10, when the temperature was a warm 15.6°C, while on October 18, it dropped to a cold minus 0.1°C.

Days were generally mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 20.7°C; up on last October’s average of 20.5°C, and above Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 19.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a hot 30.8°C, recorded on October 21, while on October 24, cloudy skies and cool W/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature to just 13.8°C.

Gungahlin received 4 frosts during October and there were no fogs.  This compares to the 5 frosts and 0 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during October 2012.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 4.5 km/h during October, with the strongest gust for the month 46.7 km/h from the NW, recorded on October 21.

Despite the cloudy skies, Gungahlin recorded just 17.8mm of rain during October, over 7 days.  This compares to the 53.6mm that fell last October and is well down on Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 50.2mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also well below average, with Canberra AP recording 13.4mm for the month, Monash 14.4mm, Tuggeranong 12.0mm and Melba 17.5mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2013 now stands at 348.0mm, well down on the 582.8mm that fell over the same period last year.
