Gungahlin records a warm end to mild October.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during October were, in the main, cooler and drier than normal.

Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 6.6°C; down on the average of 7.1°C recorded last October and slightly below Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 6.7°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on October 29, when the temperature was a mild 12.1°C, while on October 7, it dropped to a cold 0.3°C.

Days were generally mild, with an average maximum of 18.1°C; well down on Gungahlin’s long term October average of 19.9°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a very warm 28.1°C, recorded on both October the 21st and 31st, while on October 7, cloudy skies, gusty N winds and nearby mountain snow combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a cold 9.7°C.

Gungahlin recorded 2 frosts during October and there was 1 fog. This compares to the 4 frosts and 1 fog recorded last October.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.2 km/h during October, with the strongest gust for the month 54.7 km/h from the N, recorded on October 14.

Gungahlin received a pleasing 42.4mm of rain during October, over 16 days.  This compared to the 31.8mm that fell last October, but was well down on Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 53.3mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also welcome, with Canberra AP recording 42.4mm for the month and Tuggeranong an impressive 75.2mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2009 now stands at 309.0mm, down on the 339.4mm that fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's November outlook:  Warmer and drier weather conditions are expected across Gungahlin during November.  Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 25°C, and nights at 10°C.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term November average of 9.4°C to 23.4°C.  Rainfall prospects for the month ahead look a little grim, and unless Gungahlin receives rain from passing thunderstorms, it’s unlikely to receive anywhere near the longer term November average of 70mm.  With this in mind, Gungahlin looks like receiving around 40mm of rain during the month.
