Gungahlin records a cooler, wet start to spring.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during September were fairly typical of early spring, with a mix of warm and cold outbreaks, strong winds and frost.
Nights were cool to cold, with an average minimum of 4.3°C; down on the average of 4.9°C recorded last September, and slightly cooler than Gungahlin’s longer term September average of 4.4°C. The highest temperature for the month was a warm 20.0°C, recorded on September 21, while on September 5, cloudy skies, strong W/NW winds and drizzle combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 9.9°C.
Gungahlin received 8 frosts during September and there were 3 fogs. This compares to the 6 frosts and 1 fog recorded in Gungahlin during September 2009.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at a fresh 5.4 km/h during September, with the strongest gust for the month 62.8 km/h from the N/NW, recorded on September 4.
The recent spell of wet weather continued into September, with Gungahlin recording a welcome 49.0mm of rain during the month, over 10 days. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term September average of 52.0mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were more impressive, with Canberra AP recording 65.8mm for the month, Monash 96.6mm and Tuggeranong a whopping 99.0mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2010 now stands at 398.6mm, well above the 266.6mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's October outlook: Fairly typical spring weather conditions should continue in Gungahlin during October. Overall, daytime temperatures will average at around 19°C, and nights at 6°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term October average of 6.7°C to 19.8°C. Rainfall prospects for the coming months look positive, with above average falls likely. With this in mind, Gungahlin should receive at least 65mm of rain during October, above the longer term average of 52.4mm.
