Gungahlin records a cool, sunny start to Spring 2008.

Clear skies, cool temperatures and moderate NW winds dominated weather conditions across Gungahlin during the first month of Spring.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 4.6°C; up on the average of 3.8°C recorded last September.  The warmest night for the month occurred on September 20, when the temperature was a rather mild 13.2°C, while on September 9 it dropped to a freezing -2.5°C.

Days were generally cool and sunny, with an average maximum of 16.8°C; up on the 16.0°C recorded in September 2007.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 24.6°C, recorded on September 13.  In contrast, cloudy skies and fresh W to NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin’s maximum temperature on September 16 to just 10.6°C. 

Gungahlin recorded 9 frosts during September (8 frosts last September), and there were 2 fogs (0 fogs last September).  

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 5.7 km/h during September, with the strongest gust for the month 70.8 km/h from the N, recorded on September 15.

Despite the predominately clear skies during September, Gungahlin received a welcome 41.4mm of rain for the month, over 5 days.  This compared favourably to the 14.5mm which fell last September.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with 39.4mm recorded at Canberra AP and 31.2mm at Tuggeranong.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall for 2008 now stands at 307.6mm, up on the 281.6mm which fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's October Outlook:  Current indications are for fairly typical weather conditions for Gungahlin during October.  Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 20 degrees, and nights at 6 degrees.  Rainfall prospects look quite promising, with passing thunderstorms likely to generate at least average October rainfall totals across Canberra and the region.  Gungahlin looks set to receive around 50mm for the month, down slightly on the longer term October average of 55.4mm.
