Cool, windy start to spring - September 2003.

Cool temperatures, cloudy skies and an almost constant NW wind dominated weather conditions across Gungahlin during September.

Nights were cool to cold, with an average minimum of 4.5°C, up a little on last September's average of 3.9°C.   The warmest night for the month occurred on September 23, when the temperature was a warm 13.5°C, while on September 2 it dropped to a freezing minus 3.9°C.   Gungahlin's temperature dropped to 0°C or below on 6 mornings during the month.

Days were generally cool, with an average maximum of 14.5°C, well down on last September's average of 16.1°C.   The highest temperature for the month was a very warm 23.6°C, recorded on September 22, while on September 15, cloudy skies and strong, cold NW winds kept Gungahlin's maximum to just 9.4°C.   The maximum temperature failing to reach double figures in Gungahlin on 3 days during the month.

Gardener's may be interested to learn that Gungahlin received 7 frosts during September, bringing the total number of frosts so far in 2003 to 64.   There were no fogs or snowfalls, however Gungahlin recorded a brief sleet shower on September 27.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 10.9km/h during September, with the strongest gust for the month 66.0km/h from the NW, recorded on September 19.

Rainfall for the month was a little disappointing with just 22.1mm falling at the Weather Centre over 8 days.   In fact, Gungahlin's total for the month was well below that of many other parts of Canberra, with Tidbinbilla recording 93mm, Canberra AP and Tuggeranong 45mm and nearby Melba 37mm.  Gungahlin's total rainfall so far in 2003 now stands at just 320.9mm, well down on the 410.6mm that fell over the same period in 2002.

Gungahlin's October Outlook:  Current indications are for a cooler than normal October, with days averaging at 18°C and nights at around 7°C.  Rainfall looks set to be above average, with monthly totals upward of 80mm.   In fact, it appears we are entering into a much wetter period from now until Christmas.
