Gungahlin records a colder, drier August in 2018.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during August were a little colder and drier than normal.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 1.3°C; down slightly on the average of 1.6°C recorded last August.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 1.6°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on August 25, when the temperature was a mild 6.1°C, while on August 30, it dropped to a frosty minus 3.9°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 11.7°C; similar to last August’s average of 11.8°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 12.7°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a mild 17.7°C, recorded on August 3, while on August 31, continuous rain and W/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin’s’ maximum temperature to just 7.2°C.

Gungahlin received 16 frosts during August and there was 1 fog.  This compares to the 17 frosts and 2 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during August 2017.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.6km/h during August.  The strongest gust for the month was 49.9km/h from the NW, recorded on August 3.

Gungahlin recorded 37.0mm of rain during August, over 10 days.  This compares to the 48.2mm that fell last August and Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 47.4mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 29.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 24.0mm, Monash 35.0mm and Melba 31.1mm.  Gungahlin's 2018 rainfall total now stands at 316.6mm.
