Large snowflakes fall during Gungahlin's cold August 2017.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during August were colder than average, but it was the snowfall on August 27 that sent locals heading for their warm clothes and cameras.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 1.6°C; down on the average of 2.6°C recorded last August.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 1.7°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on August 16, when the temperature was a fairly mild 7.0°C, while on August 30, it dropped to a frosty minus 3.1°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 11.8°C; well below last August’s average of 13.1°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 12.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a mild 16.4°C, recorded on August 14, while on August 7, cloudy skies, gusty W winds and rain combined to keep the maximum temperature to just 6.4°C.

Gungahlin residents were treated to a wintry surprise on 27 August with earlier morning rain turning to sleet around 2pm. With the temperature dropping to just 0.7°C at 2.15pm, large snow flakes fell for around 15 minutes. Unfortunately, just as the snow started to settle on gardens, cars and decks it tapered off to just a few flurries. The temperature range in Gungahlin on 27 August was a cold -0.4°C to 7.3°C and there was 4.4mm of rain/snow. For the record, some snow has now fallen in 5 of the last 6 winters in Gungahlin.

Gungahlin received 17 frosts during August, 2 fogs and 1 snowfall.  This compares to the 14 frosts and 3 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during August 2016.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.9km/h during August.  The strongest gust for the month was 43.5km/h from the N, recorded on August 17.

Gungahlin recorded a welcome 48.2mm of rainfall during August, over 10 days.  This compares to the 42.0mm that fell last August and Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 49.1mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 49.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 54.2mm, Monash 48.8mm and Melba 62.2mm.  Gungahlin's 2017 rainfall total now stands at 316.6mm, well below the 522.4mm that fell over the same period in 2016.
