Warmer nights and less frost recorded in Gungahlin during August 2016.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during August were a little warmer and drier than normal.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 2.6°C; up on the average of 2.2°C recorded last August.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 1.7°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on August 31, when the temperature was a mild 9.1°C, while on August 27, it dropped to a freezing -4.4°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 13.1°C; well above last August’s average of 12.0°C, but close to Gungahlin's longer term August average is 12.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 18.6°C, recorded on August 30, while on August 20, cloudy skies, gusty W/NW winds and drizzle combined to keep the maximum temperature to 8.7°C.

Gungahlin received 14 frosts during August and there were 3 fogs.  This compares to the 17 frosts and 3 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during August 2015.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.4km/h during August.  The strongest gust for the month was 40.2km/h from the W/NW, recorded on August 19.

After record June (135.0mm) and July (100.2mm) rainfall in Gungahlin, August saw a further 42.0mm of rain fall, over 9 days.  This pushed the three month winter total to 277.2mm, making it the wettest winter recorded at the Weather Centre.  The previous record was 201.4mm recorded during the 2005 winter.  The 2016 total compares to the 62.6mm that fell last August and Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 49.2mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 46.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 38.2mm, Monash 38.0mm and Melba 60.1mm.  Gungahlin's 2016 rainfall total now stands at 522.4mm, well above the 371.0mm that fell over the same period in 2015.
