Snowfalls during Gungahlin's cool August 2015.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during August were slightly cooler and wetter than average, but it was the snowfalls on August 12 that really got local residents talking about the weather.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 2.2°C; well up on the average of 0.4°C recorded last August.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 1.6°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on August 23, when the temperature was a mild 9.2°C, while on August 4, it dropped to a frosty minus 4.1°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 12.0°C; well below last August’s average of 13.3°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 12.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 19.7°C, recorded on August 22, while on August 12, cloudy skies and lunchtime snow falls across Gungahlin combined to keep the maximum temperature to just 6.4°C.  The snow, which was widespread across Canberra, started around 12.30pm.  Despite the snow not settling, it was heavy enough to send people into the streets to see the falling flakes.  The snow had stopped by 12.50pm.

Gungahlin received 17 frosts during August and there were 3 fogs.  This compares to the 20 frosts and 2 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during August 2014.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.7km/h during August (average 5.5km/h last year).  The strongest gust for the month was 38.6 km/h from the N, recorded on August 22.

After a dry July, Gungahlin recorded a welcome 52.6mm of rainfall during August, over 17 days.  This compares to the 29.6mm that fell last August and Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 49.6mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were a little heavier, with Canberra AP recording 66.8mm for the month, Tuggeranong 79.2mm, Monash 81.0mm and Melba 77.9mm.
