Gungahlin records a dry, frosty August 2014.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during August were generally cooler and drier than normal.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 0.4°C; well down on the mild average of 3.3°C recorded last August.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 1.6°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on August 18, when the temperature was a mild 6.9°C, while on August 5, it dropped to an icy -6.3°C.

Days were generally cool and cloudy, with an average maximum of 13.3°C; above last August’s average of just 12.7°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 12.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 17.3°C, recorded on August 30, while on August 11, clear skies but cold S/SW winds kept Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a cold 9.3°C.

Gungahlin received 20 frosts during August and there were 2 fogs.  This compares to the 10 frosts and 5 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during August 2013.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.8km/h during August, well down on the breezy average of 5.5km/h recorded last year.  The strongest gust for the month was 35.4km/h from the N, recorded on August 1.

Rainfall during August was fairly light and well below average, with Gungahlin recording only 29.6mm for the month, over 12 days.  This compares to the 23.6mm that fell last August and Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 48.8mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 26.8mm for the month, Tuggeranong 27.6mm, Monash 30.8mm and Melba 42.0mm.
