Gungahlin's August nights well above average.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during August were warmer and drier than normal.

Nights were cool to cold, with an average minimum of 3.3°C; well up on the average of 0.3°C recorded last August.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 1.7°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on August 30, when the temperature was a mild 8.4°C, while on August 9, it dropped to a frosty -0.8°C.

Days were generally cool, cloudy and windy, with an average maximum of 12.7°C; above last August’s cold average of just 11.0°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 12.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 19.0°C, recorded on August 28, while on August 20, cloudy skies and gusty N/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 7.3°C.

Gungahlin received 10 frosts during August and there were 5 fogs.  This compares to the 21 frosts and 4 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during August 2012.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at a breezy 5.5km/h during August, up on the average of 4.7 km/h recorded last year.  The strongest gust for the month was 45.1km/h from the NE, recorded on August 14.

Rainfall during August was light, with Gungahlin recording only 23.6mm for the month, over 16 days.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 50.0mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 27.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 30.2mm, Monash 35.3mm and Melba 31.3mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2013 now stands at 281.4mm, well below the 482.4mm that fell over the same period last year.
