Winter ends without a bang.
As predicted last month, winter came to a fairly abrupt end this year, with weather conditions across Gungahlin warmer, drier and much calmer than average.
Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 2.2°C; up slightly on the average of 2.0°C recorded last August, but well above Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 1.6°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on August 6 when the temperature was a mild 5.9°C, while on August 9, it dropped to a frosty -1.2°C.
Days were generally cool and partly cloudy, with an average maximum of 14.3°C; well above last August’s average of 10.3°C. Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 12.9°C. The highest temperature for the month was a warm 19.4°C, recorded on August 3, while on August 18, overcast skies, heavy rain and gusty W/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 8.3°C.
Unfortunately, not a single snow flake fell anywhere in Gungahlin during August, making it the third winter in a row without any snow. On average, snow falls in Gungahlin every second winter.
Gungahlin received 16 frosts during August and there were 7 fogs. This compares to the 16 frosts and 1 fog recorded in Gungahlin during August 2010.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.9 km/h during August, well below the average of 5.9 km/h recorded last year. The strongest gust for the month was 33.8 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on August 18.
After the recent spell of dry weather, it was nice to see the rain return in August. Gungahlin recorded a welcome 46.6mm of rain for the month, over 8 days. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 53.0mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 52.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 62.2mm and Monash 51.6mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2011 now stands at 279.0mm, well below the 349.6mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's September outlook: After one of the mildest August’s on record, Gungahlin is likely to see above average temperatures continue during September. Overall, days should average at around 17.5°C, and nights at 5°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term September average of 4.4°C to 16.4°C. Rainfall prospects for the coming spring season look mixed, with September and November likely to be drier than normal, but October wetter. With this in mind, Gungahlin should receive around 40mm of rain during September, compared to the longer term average of 51.8mm.
