Rain returns to Gungahlin during cool, wet August 2003.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during August were cool and mostly cloudy with milder temperatures and more rain than normal.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 1.2°C, up a little on last August's average of 0.1°C.   The warmest night for the month occurred on August 13, when the temperature was a very mild 11.1°C, while on August 2 it dropped to a freezing minus 6.6°C.   In fact, Gungahlin's temperature dropped to 0°C or below on 14 mornings during the month.

Days were predominantly cool to cold, with an average maximum of 11.8°C, much cooler than last August's average of 13.8°C.   The highest temperature for the month was a very mild 14.9°C, recorded on August 5, while on August 11, overcast skies and persistent rain combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum to just 7.3°C.   The maximum temperature failing to reach double figures in Gungahlin on 6 days during the month.

Gardener's may be interested to learn that Gungahlin received 19 frosts during August, bringing the total number of frosts so far in 2003 to 57.   There were 3 fogs and no snowfalls.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 7.6km/h during August, with the strongest gust for the month 78.9km/h from the north, recorded on August 24.

The most pleasing aspect of August's weather was the return of the rain.  Gungahlin received a healthy 75.4mm of rain during the month over 13 days, easily making August the wettest month of the year so far.  Despite the good August falls, Gungahlin's total rainfall so far in 2003 now stands at just 298.8mm, well down on the 344.8mm that fell over the same period in 2002.

Gungahlin's September Outlook:  Current indications are for a cooler than average September, with days averaging at 15°C and nights at around 2°C.  On a positive note, rainfall looks set to be above average, with the monthly total likely to be in excess of 70mm.
