Gungahlin shivers through its coldest July.
If you thought it was cold this July you were right. In fact, with an average temperature of just 5.0°C, it was officially the coldest July recorded in Gungahlin since records began back in 1999. For the record, Gungahlin’s long term July average temperature is 6.5°C.
Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 0.1°C; down on
the average of 0.7°C recorded last July, and colder than Gungahlin’s longer term
July average of 1.0°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on July 20,
when the temperature was a relatively mild 5.6°C, while on July 29, it dropped
to an icy -5.7°C.
Days were generally cold and partly cloudy, with an average maximum of just 9.9°C; well down on last July’s average of 11.6°C and below Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 11.1°C. The highest temperature for the month was a mild 14.4°C, recorded on July 20, while on July 24, overcast skies and a cool NW breeze combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 5.3°C.
Gungahlin received 24 frosts during July and there were 5 fogs. This compares to the 21 frosts and 4 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during July 2010.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.9 km/h during July, well up on the average of 2.0 km/h last July. The strongest gust for the month was 57.4 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on July 5.
Gungahlin’s dry winter continued, with just 28.2mm of rain falling during July, over 13 days. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 39.7mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 25.2mm for the month, Tuggeranong 37.6mm, and Monash 36.6mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2011 now stands at 232.4mm, well below the 289.8mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's August outlook: Despite Gungahlin’s cold July, there are signs winter may come to a fairly abrupt end this year, with temperatures during August likely to be either average or a little above average. Overall, days should average at around 13.5°C, and nights at 2.0°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 1.6°C to 13.1°C. The dry winter looks set to continue into August, with Gungahlin likely to receive around 40mm of rain for the month, well below the longer term August average of 53.0mm. Despite missing out on any snow during June and July, it’s likely Gungahlin will receive one snowfall before winter finishes.
