Frosty mornings give way to milder July days in Gungahlin.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during July were dominated by cold, frosty mornings and cool, mostly sunny days.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 0.7°C; well down on the average of 2.3°C recorded last July, and slightly colder than Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 1.0°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on July 29, when the temperature was a very mild 7.7°C, while on July 4, it dropped to a frosty -3.8°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and sunny, with an average maximum of 11.6°C; up on last July’s average of 10.9°C and a little warmer than Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 11.1°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a warm 14.8°C, recorded on July 25, while on July 2, overcast skies and continuous light rain combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 5.6°C.

Gungahlin received 21 frosts during July and there were 4 fogs.  This compares to the 13 frosts and 4 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during July 2009.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.0 km/h during July, with the strongest gust for the month 54.7 km/h from the NW, recorded on July 14.

After a dry start to winter, which saw Gungahlin receive just 16.8mm of rain in June, falls in July were heavier and above average.  Gungahlin recorded 47.6mm of rain in July, over 18 days.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 39.7mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also above average, with Canberra AP recording 64.8mm for the month, Tuggeranong 53.8mm, and Monash 56.4mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2010 now stands at 289.8mm, well above the 193.0mm that fell over the same period last year.

Gungahlin's August outlook:  Winter will come to a fairly abrupt end this year as warmer daytime temperatures dominate weather conditions in Gungahlin during August.  Overall, days should average at around 14.0°C, and nights at 1.0°C.  This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term August average of 1.6°C to 13.1°C.  Rainfall prospects for the month ahead look quiet promising.  In fact, it’s looking increasingly likely that above average rain will fall across SE Australia over the next few months.  With this in mind, Gungahlin looks set to receive at least 55mm of rain during August.  Gungahlin’s longer term August average is 53.0mm.  Despite missing out on any snow during June and July, Gungahlin is still likely to receive at least one snowfall before winter finishes.
