Gungahlin records a warmer, wetter start to winter 2014.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin to start the winter season were generally a little warmer and wetter than normal, with night time temperatures particularly mild.

Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 3.4°C; up on last year’s average of 2.7°C and well above Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 2.2°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on June 1, when the temperature was a mild 8.2°C, while on June 18, it dropped to a frosty -2.9°C.

Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 11.6; down on last June’s average of 12.1°C.  Gungahlin’s longer term June average is 11.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was 15.0°C, recorded on June 9, while on June 29, overcast skies, drizzle and strong W/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 5.4°C.

Gungahlin received 13 frosts during June and there were 4 fogs.  This compares to the 14 frosts and 3 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during June 2013.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.6 km/h during June, well up on the average of 2.0 km/h recorded last year.  The strongest gust for the month was 51.5 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on June 29.

Despite forecasts of a dry winter, Gungahlin recorded a healthy 59.8mm of rain in June, over 18 days.  This compares to the 66.8mm that fell last June and Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 51.3mm.  Falls in other parts of Canberra were also generally above average, with Canberra AP recording 57.2mm of rain for the month, Tuggeranong 81.0mm, Monash 79.4mm and Melba 74.8mm.  Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2014 now stands at 270.4mm, well above the 217.8mm that fell over the same period last year.
