Gungahlin records a cool, cloudy June.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin to start the winter season were slightly cooler and drier than normal.
Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 2.1°C; up on last year’s average of 1.5°C and slightly above Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 2.0°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on June 15, when the temperature was a mild 6.5°C, while on June 20, it dropped to a very frosty -5.2°C.
Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 10.7°C; down on last June’s average of 11.6°C. Gungahlin’s longer term June average is 11.8°C. The highest temperature for the month was 13.6°C, recorded on June 3, while on June 23, cloudy skies and gusty NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 7.3°C.
Gungahlin received 13 frosts during June and there were 3 fogs. This compares to the 20 frosts and 4 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during June 2011.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.1 km/h during June, with the strongest gust for the month 43.5 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on June 22.
Despite the abundance of cloud, rainfall in June was slightly below average. In Gungahlin, 38.6mm of rain fell, over 17 days. This compares to the 13.4mm that fell last June, but is below Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 49.7mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 47.8mm of rain for the month, Tuggeranong 42.6mm, Monash 42.2mm and Melba 51.9mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2011 now stands at 411.0mm, well above the 204.2mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's July outlook: Slightly cooler and wetter than normal weather conditions are likely in Gungahlin during July. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 10.2°C, and nights at 0.8°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 1.0°C to 11.0°C. Rainfall prospects look quite positive, as does the likelihood of Gungahlin receiving some snow flurries in the third week of July. In all, Gungahlin should receive around 45mm of rain during July, up slightly on the longer term average of 38.9mm.
