Gungahlin records a cool, frosty start to winter 2010.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin to start the winter season were a little cooler and drier than normal.
Nights were cold, with an average minimum of 1.3°C; well
down on the average of 3.6°C recorded last June, and cooler than Gungahlin’s
longer term June average of 2.1°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on
June 17, when the temperature was a mild 5.4°C, while on June 14, it dropped to
an icy -4.9°C.
Days were generally cool to cold and cloudy, with an average maximum of 11.3°C; down slightly on last June’s average of 11.7°C. Gungahlin’s longer term June average maximum is 12.0°C. The highest temperature for the month was a relatively warm 14.7°C, recorded on June 21, while on June 9, cloudy skies, drizzle and fresh NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 4.8°C.
Gungahlin received 17 frosts during June and there were 3 fogs. This compares to the 10 frosts and 6 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during June 2009.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 3.0 km/h during June, with the strongest gust for the month 66.0 km/h from the N/NW, recorded on June 17.
After heavy rain in May, falls in June were disappointing with Gungahlin recording just 16.8mm of rain for the month, over 11 days. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 56.4mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were also below average, with Canberra AP recording 24.8mm for the month, Tuggeranong 35.8mm, Monash 39.0mm and Belconnen 27.4mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2010 now stands at 242.2mm, well above the 169.4mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's July outlook: Slightly colder and drier than normal weather conditions are likely to continue in Gungahlin during July. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 10.5°C, and nights at 1.0°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 1.1°C to 11.1°C. Rainfall prospects are a little harder to judge, and will largely depend on whether Gungahlin benefits from several cold outbreaks that are due to hit the area in the first and third weeks of July. With this in mind, Gungahlin should receive at least 35mm of rain in July. The July average is 39.0mm. It’s also likely Gungahlin will record at least one substantial snowfall before winter finishes.
