Gungahlin records a mild start to winter 2009.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during June were mixed, but on the whole they were slightly warmer and drier than average.
Nights were cool to cold, with an average minimum of 3.6°C; down on the very mild 4.9°C recorded last June, but still well above the longer term June average of 2.0°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on June 3, when the temperature was a mild 9.5°C, while on June 11, it dropped to a frosty -4.4°C.
Days were generally cool and cloudy, with an average maximum of 11.7°C; down on the average of 13.2°C in June 2008. The highest temperature for the month was a warm 15.9°C, recorded on June 20, while on June 12, low cloud and mist combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 2.6°C. This was the coldest day recorded in Gungahlin since the Weather Centre opened in 1998, and it beats the previous coldest maximum of 3.0°C, recorded on the very snowy day of 28 May, 2000.
Gungahlin recorded 10 frosts and 6 fogs during June, with several of the fogs not clearing until early afternoon. Gungahlin also recorded fog rolling in as early as 4pm on two days. In comparison, there were 6 frosts and 5 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during June 2008.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.1 km/h during June, with the strongest gust for the month 48.3 km/h from the N/NW, recorded on June 9.
After a very dry May, the rain returned to Gungahlin during June, with 38.6mm falling during the month, over 17 days. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 58.0mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were also a little below normal, but very welcome. Canberra AP recorded 36.8mm for the month and Tuggeranong 28.4mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2009 now stands at 169.4mm, down on the 189.2mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's July outlook: Mostly cloudy conditions look set to continue in July, with temperatures on the whole a little warmer than normal, particularly at night. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 12°C, and nights at 2.5°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term July average of 1°C to 11°C. Despite the drier than normal start to winter, conditions look favourable for above average rainfall in July. Gungahlin is likely to receive around 50mm for the month, up on the longer term average of 40mm.
