Gungahlin records a cold, frosty May.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during May were much colder and drier than normal.
Nights were generally cold and frosty, with an average minimum of 1.8°C, down on last Mays average of 3.7°C, and well below Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 3.8°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on May 2, when the temperature was a mild 8.3°C, while on May 15, it dropped to an icy minus 4.0°C.
Due to the mostly clear and calm night time conditions, Gungahlin recorded 19 frosts during the May, and there were 4 fogs. This compares to last Mays 13 frosts and 6 fogs.
Days were generally cool to mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 13.9°C; down on last years average of 15.1°C and significantly below Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 16.0°C. The highest temperature for the month was a pleasant 19.3°C, recorded on May 1, while on May 11, cloudy skies, gusty winds and morning sleet, combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a cold 7.9°C.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 2.2 km/h during May, with the strongest gust for the month 38.6 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on May 23.
The recent dry spell of weather continued into May, with Gungahlin recording only 14.6mm of rain for the month, over 6 days. May is traditionally the driest month of the year in Gungahlin with an average of 24.5mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were also light, with Canberra AP recording just 12.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 24.6mm, Monash 25.0mm and Melba 21.4mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2011 stands at 190.7mm, well below the 225.4mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's June outlook: Current indications are that weather conditions in Gungahlin for the first month of winter will be cold, but largely fine. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 12.0°C, and nights at 1.0°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 2.1°C to 11.9°C. Despite the recent dry spell, rainfall prospects for June look quite positive. Gungahlin should receive close to 50mm of rain for the moth, slightly below the longer term June average of 53.3mm.
