Gungahlin receives a wet end to a mild May.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during May were slightly cooler, more cloudy and wetter than normal.
Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 3.7°C; well
down on the average of 4.7°C recorded last May, and slightly cooler than
Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 3.8°C. The warmest night for the month
occurred on May 4, when the temperature was a mild 8.8°C, while on May 13, it
dropped to a frosty -0.3°C.
Days were generally mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 15.1°C; down on last May’s average of 15.8°C and cooler than Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 16.0°C. The highest temperature for the month was a warm 21.7°C, recorded on May 3, while on May 30, continuous rain and gusty W/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 10.3°C.
Gungahlin received 13 frosts during May and there were 6 fogs. This compares to the 7 frosts and 3 fogs recorded in Gungahlin during May 2009.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.4 km/h during May, with the strongest gust for the month 45.1 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on May 11.
Widespread, heavy rain hit the region during the last week of May pushing totals in many areas well above the monthly average. In Gungahlin, 45.2mm of rain fell over 11 days. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 24.5mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were heavier, with Canberra AP recording 79.4mm for the month, Tuggeranong 70.6mm, Monash 72.1mm and Belconnen 29.6mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2010 now stands at 225.4mm, well above the 130.8mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's June outlook: Current indications are that this winter in Gungahlin will be cooler and wetter than average. It’s also likely Gungahlin will record at least one substantial snowfall before winters finished. In June, daytime temperatures should average at around 11.5°C, and nights at 2.5°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 2.1°C to 12.0°C. Rainfall prospects for the winter season look promising, with Gungahlin having a 60% chance of exceeding the longer term winter average of 148.4mm. With this in mind, Gungahlin should receive at least 40mm of rain in June. The June average is 38.6mm.
