Plenty of cloud but little rain during Gungahlin’s mild May.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during May were dominated by cloudy skies, mild temperatures and little to no rain.
Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 4.7°C; up on
last May’s average of 3.5°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on May
23, when the temperature was a mild 9.7°C, while on May 7, it dropped to a cold
Days were mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 15.8°C; down slightly on the average of 16.0°C in May 2008. The highest temperature for the month was 18.8°C, recorded on May 2, while on May 14, cloudy skies and gusty NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 11.3°C.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.7 km/h during May, with the strongest gust for the month 57.9 km/h from the N/NW, recorded on May 16.
Proving winter isn’t too far away; Gungahlin recorded 7 frosts and 3 fogs during May. This compares to the 12 frosts and 8 fogs recorded during May 2008.
After some promising rain during April, falls during May were very disappointing. Gungahlin recorded just 4.0mm for the month, over 11 days. Falls in other parts of Canberra were also well below normal, with 5.0mm falling at Tuggeranong and just 2.4mm at Canberra AP. In fact, this was the forth lowest May total at Canberra AP since records began in 1935. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2009 now stands at 130.8mm, down on the 160.0mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's June outlook: Cloudy conditions look set to continue well into June, producing above average temperatures for the first month of winter, especially at night. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 13°C, and nights at 4°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term June average of 2°C to 12 °C. Despite the dry May, conditions look more favourable for at least average rainfall over the coming winter months. With this in mind, Gungahlin is likely to receive at least 50mm of rain during June, down slightly on the longer term June average of 59mm.
