Gungahlin records a slightly cooler, wetter April 2012.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during April were slightly cooler and wetter than normal.
Nights were cool, with an average minimum of 6.9°C, up on last Aprils average of 5.9°C but slightly cooler than Gungahlin’s longer term April average 7.1°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on April 5, when the temperature was a mild 12.9°C, while on April 10, it dropped to a cold 0.6°C.
Days were generally mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of 18.8°C; up on last years average of 18.4°C but down on Gungahlin’s longer term April average of 20.5°C. The highest temperature for the month was a warm 25.4°C, recorded on April 4, while on ANZAC Day, cloudy skies and gusty W/NW winds combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to a cold 9.7°C. This made it the coldest ANZAC Day in Gungahlin since the Weather Centre opened in 1999.
Proving winter isn’t too far away, Gungahlin recorded its first frost of the year on April 10. In comparison, Gungahlin first frost last year was recorded 13 days later, on April 23. Gungahlin also recorded 6 fogs during the month compared to the 3 fogs last April.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.9 km/h during April, with the strongest gust for the month 38.6 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on April 25.
Despite the cloudy skies, rainfall during April was fairly light, with Gungahlin recording 34.2mm of rain for the month, over 9 days. Interestingly, 29.4mm of the April total fell during a very heavy downpour on April 19. In comparison, just 11.2mm of rain fell in April 2011. Gungahlin’s longer term April average is 27.0mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were similar, with Canberra AP recording 17.6mm for the month, Tuggeranong 45.6mm and Monash 37.4mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2011 now stands at 348.6mm, well above the 176.2mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's May outlook: May in Gungahlin looks set to be slightly cooler and a little wetter than normal. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 15.5°C, and nights at 4.0°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term May average of 3.8°C to 16.0°C. May is traditionally the driest month of the year in Gungahlin with an average of just 23.8mm. Despite this, rainfall prospects for May look quite positive, with Gungahlin likely to receive at least 35mm for the month.
