Surprises in April 2001 weather.

Just when it looked like the cooler weather would move in, Mother Nature threw a surprise during April, with temperatures up and rainfall well down on the previous year.

Nights were cool with an average minimum of 6.5°C (6.4°C last year).   The warmest night occurred on April 10 when the temperature was 12°C, while on April 13 it dropped to -2°C.

Gungahlin received its first frost of 2001 on April 12, compared with April 18 last year.  Five frosts were recorded during the month, the same as in April 2000.

Days were generally mild to warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 21.5°C (20.0°C in 2000).   The highest temperature was 28°C, recorded on April 19.  In contrast, a cool easterly airstream, combined with an almost continuous drizzle, kept the maximum to just 13°C on April 24.

Despite the cloudy skies, rainfall was scarce, with just 5.2mm falling on four days.  This was well below the 82.5mm recorded in April last year.
