Gungahlin records a very warm, dry March in 2016.

Weather conditions across Gungahlin during March were considerably warmer and a little drier than normal.

Nights were mild, with an average minimum of 13.1°C; well up on the average of 10.3°C recorded last March.  Gungahlin’s longer term March average is 11.4°C.  The warmest night for the month occurred on March 10, when the temperature was 17.8°C, while on March 20 it dropped to a cool 6.1°C.

Days were generally very warm and cloudy, with an average maximum of 27.3°C; well up on last years average of 25.6°C, and considerably higher than Gungahlin’s longer term March average of 24.8°C.  The highest temperature for the month was a hot 35.0°C, recorded on March 5.  This is the highest March maximum recorded at the Weather Centre and beats the previous record high of 34.6°C on 5 March 2004.  In contrast, Gungahlin recorded a maximum of just 18.3°C on March 18.

Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at 1.1km/h during March, with the strongest gust for the month 49.9km/h from the NE, recorded on March 18.

Gungahlin recorded 32.8mm of rain in March, over 9 days.  This compares to the 11.8mm that fell in Gungahlin last March and Gungahlin’s longer term March average of 42.6mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were generally a little heavier, with Canberra AP recording 28.4mm for the month, Tuggeranong 54.4mm, Monash 51.4mm and Melba 40.7mm.  Gungahlin’s 2016 rainfall now stands at 162.2mm, well above the 123.2mm that fell over the same period last year.
