Records tumble during Gungahlin's cool, wet March.
Weather conditions across Gungahlin during March were much cooler and wetter than normal.
Nights were cool to mild, with an average minimum of 9.9°C; down on the average of 11.1°C recorded last March. Gungahlin’s longer term March average is 11.3°C. The warmest night for the month occurred on March 4, when the temperature was a muggy 13.7°C, while on March 25, it dropped to a cold 3.6°C.
Days were generally mild and cloudy, with an average maximum of just 20.8°C; down on last years average of 22.3°C and well below Gungahlin’s longer term March average of 24.7°C. In fact, it was the coolest average maximum recorded during March since records began at the Weather Centre back in 1999. The highest temperature for the month was a warm 26.7°C, recorded on March 14, while on March 2, overcast skies and continuous rain combined to keep Gungahlin's maximum temperature to just 14.7°C.
Proving winter isn’t too far away, Gungahlin recorded its first major fog of the year on March 29. The fog, which had cleared by 10am, was thick enough to cause hazardous conditions during the early morning commute.
Winds at the Weather Centre averaged at just 1.9 km/h during March, with the strongest gust for the month 41.8 km/h from the W/NW, recorded on March 23.
After a very wet February, which saw 118.4mm of rain fall in Gungahlin, the heavy rain continued in March. In fact, Gungahlin recorded its wettest March on record with 166.0mm of rain falling during the month, over 15 days. The previous record was 73.6mm back in March 1999. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term March average of just 42.3mm. Falls in other parts of Canberra were also heavy, with Canberra AP recording 198.0mm for the month, Tuggeranong 269.6mm, Monash 224.6mm and Melba a record 275.8mm. Gungahlin’s total rainfall so far in 2012 now stands at 314.4mm, well above the 165.0mm that fell over the same period last year.
Gungahlin's April outlook: Slightly cooler, cloudier weather conditions look set to continue into April. Overall, daytime temperatures should average at around 19°C, and nights at 6°C. This compares to Gungahlin’s longer term April average of 7.2°C to 20.5°C. The recent spell of wet weather will ease during April, but Gungahlin should still receive above average falls of around 60mm for the month. Gungahlin’s longer term April average is just 27.0mm.
